The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs: Wal-Mart yanks Linux PC, cites lack of childlike wonder

What a mess! When Apple gives free the genious Software Leo for each other Computer, i will buy it prompty, when it must be with a Dell- or HP-machine, if Apple won't sell it for a aequivalent price in a real Apple-machine for nonsnobs.
  • g4Wheels · 1 year ago
    Sorry, Apple doesn't sell junk.
  • acap. · 1 year ago
I know, most consumers would have the best comfortable computers for prices as low as possible. But Apple helps to sell "MicrosoftJunkware" as long the real Appleprices don't come lower. You will see, Microsoft will be in two years or lesser more over than it is today, when quality software from Apple can run without restrictions in usual price segments.
For the incorrigible snobs, Apple can sell beside still along exclusive pieces knitted with diamonds, mahaghoni, gold or special art inlayed designs from picasso, modigliani, cezanne, van gogh asl. if it must bee, or intarsias with wood from the from humans ripped rain-forrests. The american spacecraft can go to forreign planets like the moon to keep some original moonstones if apple planes one day to give away a real Apple with real moonstone-design for one of this some incorrigible snobs on earth. If it must bee i can offer some artists excrement that Apple can melting that down in acrylcase. I' ve also some sampled cork from many years before for recycling in reserve if this peoples from the prosperityclass wish to have. Why don't offer Apple Cupertino tomorrow "the shit your own design Apple" on the free market place. It wounds me really.

No i was once a human, but since playitcools pseudolinguistic transformal definition i'm now reduced to a fake noamerican chromsky responder. As i can understand i'm Eddie the second. But it is very unsure. My real ratname is Vermillon Quark.

    Testify FSJ, Testify!

Brilliant post (again). Maybe if the gPC machines came with cupholders the machines would have a greater appeal for the Walmart crowd. Or perhaps gPC could cross-promote with a USB connected deep-fryer...

Isn't this the second time that Linux has been booted off of Wal-Mart shelves? I seem to remember that back in the late nineties, early zeros Wal-Mart tried foisting cheap Linux boxes off on it's tech challenged customers, but once these customers found out that the computers were junk said customers returned said junk computers in droves.

Shows you how much Linux has evolved on the consumer end in eight years. Answer: Not much.

Hey, it's not the fault of the Linux nerds that Joe Trailerhitch doesn't know how to recompile the Linux kernel and edit a dozen configuration files using "vi" to just get his video driver to work.

My entire taping system ran on Linux, and Rosemary Woods could run it just fine.

    >>>Hey, it's not the fault of the Linux nerds that Joe Trailerhitch doesn't know how to recompile the Linux kernel and edit a dozen configuration files using "vi" to just get his video driver to work.

See, I hear kindergarten kids in India and China can!

Now we have a Freetard Gap!!

    >>>My entire taping system ran on Linux, and Rosemary Woods could run it just fine.

Ah, you provided us all with an exciting time, Dick. Why don't you get the hell out of that tomb? America needs you!

These were Lindows PCs, with the infamous Click'n'Run download store. If you were smart or Linux savvy, you didn't need Click'n'Run, you knew how to download your software packages for free using rpm. If you were a noobie switching from Microsoft or Apple, you paid $99 annual subscription to go to CNR store, choose software packages you wanted, clicked on it and downloaded. Convenience for people who didn't want to mess around on command line. But despite the nice shiny Microsoft interface on Lindows, support really sucked at time and the boxes looked really lame, too.

Click 'n' Run: What a concept!
  • lastangelman · 1 year ago
Well, SJV-N is right on top of the the story but you neglected to mention the FULL story, that walmart.com will continue selling the Everex line.
1.)Most Everex units were not sold in the stores but online. Very limited amount (about five to eight per store depending on population) were in brick and mortars, the rest sold out online.
2.)Linux computers, including its UMPC and Cloudbook will still be sold at walmart.com online, where they still sellout. Want the phone number to call the rep and verify that?
3.)Everex is now launching its own version of the Mini which runs on gOS, of course. Because it has better hardware than the towers, it prices just below that of a MacMini, has one year warranty and 24/7 telephone support. Cool kids on budgets for bucks and space will still buy MacMini, but for now, I only see Linux fans, not people turning away from Vista, buying the Everex Mini, unless WAL*MART and Everex spend bucks advertising unit.
4.)SVN-J already did a story(feel free to cut and paste) on this guy who engineered the buyout/bailout of SCOG, and the Saudis complied , as a favor to Bill, knowing full well SCOG, at this time, is a toilet. (But at least they got rid of this <a href="http://www.linuxwins.com/darl_mcbride.jpg"prick, who made out like a bandit. Wonder what patent troll company he'll be hired by next?)Anyway, I'm pretty sure Everex being dropped from box stores is NOT a Microsoft conspiracy of any kind, as WAL*MART tells Ballmer to jump, he asks with or without a chair (at that moment, black ops from Bentonville duct tape Ballmer to an American Standard and defenestrate him for wasting time with a stupid question. Moshe's equal from Bentonville is Saira, she's Pakistani-Lebanese-Jordanian, an atheist, trained by PRC, served in Angola, PLO, Somalia, Europe.Opted into Bentonville after '89, personally hired by Sam Walton after she took a loyalty oath and shot ten Nicaraguan Communists stone cold dead in 7 seconds on Sam's private reserve in Fayetteville).

Wal-Mart customers may not be the most sophisticated shoppers on the planet, but they do understand "cheap". So the curious part of this story, which FSJ uncharacteristically seems to have missed, is that the entire stock of low-cost Linux boxes that Wal-Mart offered SOLD OUT very quickly.

Normally this would be a good reason for Wal-Mart to stuff their stores with even more green PC's. The response that "Our customers want this so much that we have stopped selling it" is extremely curious.

BTW, I downloaded the gOS that the Wal-Mart Linux PC runs, and got it to run on my MacBook. It works great, and looks very much like the Mac OS X, except that instead of blue everything is green!
  • SAPTard · 1 year ago
The well-known close ties between Microsoft and Wal-Mart are a lo closer than that, FSJ, with ex "Sam's Club Prez Kevin Turner now operating as Microsoft's COO and #2 to StevieB... Oooooh, I smell anti-trust at the very least:-)
  • David H Dennis · 1 year ago
I visited Wal*Mart's computer section a few times and never saw even one of these.

To be fair, you really don't want to buy a Linux PC without being able to try it out in the store, and Wal*Mart does not even turn on the PCs they sell. Most of them are not even displayed outside of the boxes. A Wal*Mart computer buyer reads the specs on the machine, decides which one is best and throws it in the shopping cart.

Oddly enough, the cheapest machine I saw there was $499 without monitor and the best deal was probably the $599 machine with a dual core processor and 20" monitor.

They are brand name machines, so I have to assume they are no different from what you'd get at a Best Buy.

That seems like they're a good deal. Whether they are good computers I leave as an exercise for the reader. When I checked out PCs in Best Buy I was astonished at how much truly obnoxious software is loaded on those machines.

Jesus fuck! Everex? WTF? I purchased my first laptop from them in LA in 1992. The thing blew up and the ABSOLUTE CUNTS at the Writers Computer Store did SWEET FUCK ALL about it. I still have a contract out on their asses. Everybody: STAY WELL CLEAR OF EVEREX - the sell boat anchors for computers. WTF this world is going to hell in a handbasket!
  • Mike Cane · 1 year ago
    >>>the gPC machine shipped without a monitor, which apparently confuses Wal-Tards who get home and turn it on and then call tech support asking why can't they see anything

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!

And another neologism: Wal-Tard! Love it!!

Never heard from "presstard-concept". Remove reality and build a free juicy press.
  • Mr. Joshua · 1 year ago
They've discontinued the in-store purchases, but they remain online. Really, I think it just shows that those who buy Linux computers don't want to be seen going into Wal*Mart stores...or leaving their homes...

The best comment I read on groklaw about linux, windows and os x was:
"If we wanted something that just worked we would all be running macs"
This may not be germane but I wanted to share it.
  • Levon · 1 year ago
Excellent!! Sadly, I don't think the theory that you suggest at the end of the piece is far removed from reality...
  • DarkSol · 1 year ago
Meh, people who shop at Wal-Mart are too dumb to understand WINDOWS PC's, much less Linux.

    Case in point:
I work in tech support, and someone wondered why their PC wouldn't boot. I told them to check the connections, and they said, and I quote:
"The power cord is pluged in, and there's this blue plug I assume is for upgrades, cuz PCs can do that now! But the problem is that it stays black when I turn it on, and the light on the front stays yellow..."

They only had a monitor. And it was from walmart.

I rest my case. Linux PC's should be ONLY sold in tech stores.

Gee, oh Great One, while I defer to your bashing of the freetards most of the time my 10 year old just got an ASUS eee Linux "laptop" and she is happy as a pig in shit. She took the Apple stickers from her iPod and plastered them on the case. She now thinks she has an Air but it's a pound lighter and $1500 cheaper and she doesn't care. And it runs the American Girl website just fine. So screw me for being a cheap bastard.

    PS send me more stickers.

As much as I hate to agree with FSJ on this issue, since he's so fucked in the head re: FOSS, I have to, albeit for different reasons.

Wal-Tards (brilliance!) are probably too stupid to use OS X; so who in the hell thought it'd be a good idea to market Linux to them?

The world don't want Linux on a home PC...They want Word and Messenger on their home PC; that's it. Perhaps Microsoft should make a Linux version of those 2 apps :-D ...then again who cares. Linux + Windows sucks.

There's nothing wrong with someone wanting to pay 200.00 for something that works and does email and can browse a few sites like eBay. The problem is, once again, everyone overthinking EVERYTHING.
Engineer 1: Hey, what if your average Walmart customer wants a GUI interface to upload current RGI Graphics and doesn't have the SMT interace driver version 3.2?
Engineer 2: WTF? How about just making the thing work. Are you some sort of freakin' idiot?

But surprise, surprise, you don't read all the comments, meaning not only do you have nothing new to add, you are in the same league as Mr Cut And Paste.
For those who'd love to gloat even more, Eee PC Asus with stripped down XP Home outsells Linux version 3 to 2. What I wanna know is how the hell did they make a bare bones version of Windows XP SP2 that'd run on that toy and how often does it crash?
  • bucketOfColdWater() · 1 year ago
You know, this is just a hunch, but Wal-Mart is probably not the best place to be trying to market underdog technology in the first place. Maybe I'm crazy, but the folks who shop there don't strike me as "rebels." Schmucks, maybe, but definitely not the "round pegs in the square holes" types. I don't think this is the most receptive audience to alternate ways of thinking.

Why doesn't apple go the way of pc, and allow any computer to use apple software, I would give up ms windows program for apple program, there are less problems. I mean hard drive, memory chips, modem, everything is the same. I just don't feel like forking out a ton of money to buy apple computers and systems. And should ms compatible programs if apple doesn't have an equivelant program.

    >>>Nonetheless freetard hack boy says, "I don't think this is the end of the road for retail Linux PCs -- not by a long shot," though he concedes that "selling Linux to the masses is going to require more than just a low price tag -- since, when you get down to it, Linux already has that."

Hey, I know! Instead of making Linux better so that people actually want to use it of their own free will, let's just argue on the Internet about it all day, lie about what it's capable of, and tell everyone how much better it is than Windows!

Jobso needs to sieze the opportunity here and start selling Macs at Wal*Mart. Hell, Best Buy, the Wal*Mart of electronic gizmos, is already an authorized dealer.

Yeah, I can just see Cletus plunking down 180,000 pennies for a computer with no ethernet, no optical drive and no pre-loaded link to EmperorsClub.com where he can order a $5000 escort. Oh well, he can always rent the so-called-HD version of "Pretty Woman" from iTunes for $50.
