The whole piece was satire -- it wasn't a real focus group. This is a good effort by a couple of kids playing around.

Now, how many of you know that in 1983, the REAL board of directors at Apple Computer rejected this advertisement? Yes, the dweebs on the board HATED it. It was almost never shown to the public. The only thing that saved it was the amount of money invested in making it.

hey morron, that "description" would have been enough for the ad agency and apple to decide to "Shoot" the actual thing. It was enough for the purse men of the time to relase the budget for it. At least these cretins got the the final sound design.
Also - the fact that was 1984 is a nice coincidence - but people didn't praise the commercial cause "oh look 1984! and its 1984!, teehee" - it was a wonderful CONCEPT...btw did you listen to what they criticized anyway?

If you don't count obviously small, indie movies like Metropolis, On The Beach, Planet of the Apes as a number of examples that took five seconds of thought.

This is more a reflection on the difference in education between 1984 and 2007. Does the name George Orwell even pass a teacher's lips (or pass between their two brain cells), let alone require students to study one of his novels?

If you've ever built a product and had a focus group take a look at it, this is how it goes.

However, the Board-O-Matic was pretty dull and defeated the point of the real commercial...it wasn't compelling to look at. Also, since 1984, there have been a ton of dystopian futures shown in movies and TV, so it's not nearly as novel as it once was. Remember, Blade Runner had only come out in 1982.
