The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs: New MacBook priced better than Dell. No kidding.

  • Technic · 1 year ago
The Spec's on the MacBook are half the Spec's of the Dell Laptop at the same price.
  • J242 · 1 year ago
Ummm, read the info in the link, the macbook has a faster proc but weighs about a pound heavier and doesn't have a 56k Modem. Otherwise, they are pretty much the same but the macbook is cheaper. Feel free to remove that unsightly foot from you mouth now thanks...
  • Nathaniel · 1 year ago
Because you don't have any decent home systems for less than $2,200?

Apple DOES have a huge share of the laptop market, they just don't have anything competitive on the desktop side.
  • woz · 1 year ago
Why the fuck does the MacBook still have a shitty "Combo Drive"?

    Even the name is ghey.
  • gg · 1 year ago
So they compared the best of Dell to worst of Apple. That's a fair comparison, isn't it?
  • ryan Nicholson · 1 year ago
the macbook is not the worst apple it has been one of apple's most successful computers
  • Dave · 1 year ago
The dell is 1 lb lighter. For someone who travels alot that's a god send and people are willing to pay that extra $100 or whatever it cost to have a light notebook.
  • PapayaSF · 1 year ago
Steve, for years there's been a huge hole in your product mix: an affordable minitower. Call it a Mac Mini Pro: a Mac Mini on steroids with a fast processor, a real graphics card, and (maybe!) one free slot. Sell that for $900 and you'll see legions of switchers leery of Vista and upgraders who want more than a Mini, don't want to replace their current monitor, and for whom a $2,500 Mac Pro is total overkill. (I'm a web pro, and even I don't need four hard drive bays, two optical bays, eight RAM slots, etc.)
  • krokodoofilus · 1 year ago
Because the NSA / CIA et al have a vested interest in keeping 'back-door' Windows on as many machines as possible.

it seems the Mac is the machine of choice in 'corporate' environments like the USAF, ASIO, MI6 etc etc

I always thought that the whole government infrastructure and the sercurity of our country was based on Window's 94 or DOS.

    hmph?
  • /V · 1 year ago
Eh eh, for a moment I though you weren't kidding.

No seriously, don't you REALLY get it why Apple hasn't got the market yet?

MAYBE it's because the market is made ALSO by people who don't want to spend 1000$ for a 13 inches screen.

MAYBE because those people can STILL buy a Dell Vostro with 250 Gb of HD, a SWGA display and a nvidia 8600GT card for 900$, if the want to.

Where's the same choice with Apple?
  • JJ · 1 year ago
    8600GT... Haha.

    Anyway:
    http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.a...
    I see no 8600GT

Oh and can it run OS X without breaking the law? Didn't think so.

Up to NVIDIA® GeForceTM 8600M GT with 256MB DDR22 dedicated graphics memory

You are right that you can't run OsX legally on that. Then I would assume that Apple doesn't have 90% of market share because 90% of the market doesn't give a crap about OsX...
  • anthony · 1 year ago
ouch...tell that to all the people walking with their ipods, iphones, macbooks, etc. etc. etc.
  • Mike · 1 year ago
HAHA. That is the problem with you blind fan boys. Apple's success has little to do with OSX or thier PCs.

True, we could ask all those people walking around with ipods, but they could give a damn about OSX, since most of them are NOT OSX users.

    Try again.
  • Lupu · 1 year ago
i guess he couldn't try again. i have a mac mini with C2D and "integrated graphics" for 599+ tax. i could've got the same machine with half the price or dedicated graphics and more ram with the same money

  • Xeno · 1 year ago
Cus' it is. This comparison is like comparing a Lotus elise and a Ford Torus because they both have 4cyl engines.
  • Brookespeed · 1 year ago
I'm no Mac fan but have always held some admiration for the lowest price point macbook. It has always been the smallest, cleanest design. But pre-Intel macs were a joke. And now they are no longer bargain books with small PC based notebooks being in the 500.00 range (again setting the stage for Macs costing twice as much). The real killer for me now is, as mentioned many times, the lack of a right-click. It really is that useful. That and the fact that I don't buy anything without a red nipple in the middle of the keyboard. But if it did have a right click, the nice looking, well built little notebook that can easily run all the big 3 OSs would possibly creep onto my list for my next laptop computer. Even without the sexy space saving red nipple. Multi touch is for massage tables.

    All Macs right click.
1)Use current mouse, pad, or whatever and right click.
2)Hold down CNTL key, left click is right click.
3)Use Logitech or any mouse, right click.
I am using a 2003 Mac right now and right clicking.

you dont have 90% market share because macs are useless unless you are doing graphics design or programming - the average user is clueless when it comes to using a mac, so they go with what they know
  • Johnny Rico · 1 year ago
I don't know I use mine for a hell of alot more than graphic design. There is also video editing, photo work, it also functions very well as an entertainment centre, I play games, yes games on my macs. I have no trouble right clicking. Not clueless, been using computers for 24 years now, have been building and fixing pc's for 10 of those, and decided I hated the hassle that came with pcs. Since I have never missed windows, and my computer is an everyday tool for me, I would hardly call them useless.
  • ShakeWhenBad · 1 year ago
Most likely reason Macs do not have 90% market share is: 1) they do have errors, they simply changed the blue screen of death color 2) they advertise to wanna be Gen X, Y,Z(whatever generation they decided could spend their parents money) 3)the people referred to in point 2 really piss everyone else off with their unfounded "Im so cool" vibe while most are prob still virgins. Just because a marketing team decided your cool does not make it so. 3)while Macs have increased actual usefulness they are really pigeon holed to music, graphic design and blogging. All of those are fundamentally useless unless you are a point 2 person. Did I mention if you use one for with CAD thats ALL YOU USE IT FOR.
  • Bob · 1 year ago
Because it is still a mac, with a Mac OS limited to Mac only applications, which immediately eliminates the vast majority of the market, which wants PCs which tend to run a windows OS or natively emulates a windows OS, and can use windows applications.

Until such time as Macs give up completely on proprietary idiocy, we're halfway there alreay, and match pricepoints, hit or miss on the product line last I checked, Mac's will remain outside the mainstream.

Oh, and bringing back the quality control would be good. The Latest OSX makes me think Microsoft wrote its code.
  • D · 1 year ago

Maybe because if you pay list price for a Dell you are retarded since they run deals all the time.
  • Revan2 · 1 year ago
The reason is that virtually nobody needs a machine that powerful, that a Dell laptop for $600-700 is more than enough for most users needs(once you add $40 aftermarket ram to get 2gb).

The only difference is, in six months that Dell machine will cost $500 less... while the Mac will be the same price. And underpowered compared to Dell's current offering at the time.

Because some people are just penny-wise and pound-foolish?

Because a lot of people treat personal computers as just another Wal-Mart commodity and they want the lowest-price option, regardless of the fact that it's an underpowered box o' crap that will break if you hit the wrong key or tap the case?

Frankly, SJ, those are the people you don't want buying Apple anyway. There's no profit in selling to them, and as you've said yourself, they'd just bring discredit to the brand. You don't even want them setting foot in an Apple store; they'd just bring down the tone.
  • Johnny Rico · 1 year ago
Your absolutley correct here, there is a reason that Apple has one of the best customer satisfaction results in the tech sector. Sure Dell has a $600 laptop, they have sub $1000 desktops, which is all well and good, but how do they get them to that point, using generic parts. Dell, HP/Compaq, and the others have been scrapping the bottom of the barel for computer parts for years. It's also why every dell I have is virtually not upgradable passed its best before date of 3 years. Every pc i've worked with or owned hasn't made it past a 3 year usability date, but my last apple computer was just replaced after 7. Hell I got an imac for my parents almost 8 years ago and it's just now needing to be replaced for what they need it for.

This is across the board with everyone else that I know that uses mac, they have a longer usability life. I've never needed to upgrade a single component in my mac before I felt that I needed to replace the whole computer.

Steve-o, thank you for keeping up the every-Tuesday-since-the-start-of-2008 Apple Store update schedule. It makes Tuesdays more bearable knowing there might be a new thing to get.

Two new 17" MBPs are soon to be on their way (one for work, one for home), and I could not be happier. Also, thanks for keeping the resale value for Apple's goods so high- new purchases are almost always nearly written off by the sale of their previous versions,
  • 7oby · 1 year ago
it's a laptop, d00d, you could have one for both
  • topazz · 1 year ago
I'll tell you why: because Dell does a demographic mail out, a full color brochure of their entire line every damn month, without fail. I know because I'm one of the lucky suckers who get it.

See, if just one of you lived in an average joe neighborhood out here in suburbia instead of in your upscale lofts, you'd know this already. Idiots.
  • lastangelman · 1 year ago
If you register online for Quicktime, iTunes or any Apple products, there is a request for your e-mail so you can receive "notifications" from Apple of latest products, upgrades, sales, etc. without wasting dead tree resources.
You can purchase online from Apple or be directed to a convenient nearest Apple boutique. Believe me, in ten years, these stores will be as ubiquitous as Radio Shacks and 7-Elevens.
  • JimBob · 1 year ago
Yes, I totally agree, in this average joe neighborhood here, lofts across town.
And in receiving that Dell mailer, the average person (especially over 45)says, "Oh I am going a buy a(any) computer, for the best price." There leads Dell, Walmart, or Best Buy with Windows.

Not taking into account long-term/resale value, ease of use, functionlaity, and portability. Many choose the big tower box.
Even though the Mac Mini or iMac has all or more power than the big tower box with Vista installed. Many think they are bringing home more computer. like the cars of the 1950's/early 1960's when in fact it is less.

Can't afford a new Mac? Hit eBay, any of the dozens of resellers online. Works for me.
  • DougS · 1 year ago
Bullshit, that's nothing more than populist tripe. When I look at how Apple Stores are distributed in the Southern California area, most are in middle-class suburban areas: Brea, Rancho Cucamonga, Pasadena, Irvine, etc., and the people who shop there are decidedly middle-class. In fact, I would wager that there are more farms in Rancho Cucamonga than there are "upscale lofts."

If the smart money determined market share we would all have cheaper systems running our Linux distro of choice, and proprietary hardware and software would be thrown to the dogs.
  • r3loaded · 1 year ago
It's exactly because the Dell comes with Windows and the Mac comes with Mac OS. People want an OS that can actually run the software that they use. In particular:

    GAMES!

And the only reason Vista has caused problems for users is because of a lack of well-written drivers, and the hardware makers are to blame. For instance, I'll never buy an HP product again since they refuse to write a Vista driver for a 2004 scanner, and would rather I bought a new one instead.
  • Beloq · 1 year ago
Go take a closer look at those two laptops. The macbook has a thick and sharp edge right where your wrists go. The Dell tapers down so that it's much more ergonomic to type on. The Dell is also light and a *lot* more configurable. It can reach into the larger MacBook Pro performance (and price) range without any increase in size. Dell has a good product on their hands, and for a change, it actually looks better than the Mac alternatives to boot.

The only real problem I see with the Dell is Vista. However, Dell is now selling a Ubuntu equipped version of the 1330. The discount is a bit disappointing though.
  • DougS · 1 year ago
    Guess again, numbnuts.

    1) The PC is no longer the dominant gaming environment. Consoles are now where it's at. 5 years ago, you would have scored with that point. Not now, after two generations of Xbox and three generations of Playstation.

    2) Have you heard the news that Macs use Intel chips now, and that you can run Windows pretty easily on Macs? Ergo, your Windows games should run on a Mac running Windows. In fact, PC World recently stated flat-out that Vista runs best on the MacBook Pro.

Given the ease with which you can now run Windows on current-gen Mac hardware, lack of any kind of software is no longer an excuse for not buying a Mac.
  • Technic · 1 year ago
    1) PC games always will dominant on Mac. Some people still prefers playing on PC due to higher resolution non-upscale crap like console games.

    2) Mac knows customers want PC more due to better value and speed and spec's. Which is why Mac use Intel cpu to become PC's lol. PC World is rubbish place to shop and take there word for it. Beside the spec they tested on they never had higher spec on PC laptop to compare to MacBook Pro.

Bottom line, Apple needs more competitve price to PC and laptop on Spec wise and customisable. Apple runs great cause it only runs on handful of selected components which Apple enough time to optimise.
  • Brad · 1 year ago
How about having to buy a windows license IN ADDITION to an OSX license? Add another $215 on there (for those of us who don't download our software for free) and the Mac isn't quite as price-competitive.

Then throw on the terrible stigma of being a "mac guy" - not being associated with the kind of person who uses "ergo" superfluously and begins written communication with an insult and sarcasm, well that's worth a hell of a lot more than $20, a price difference you can bet Dell will remedy within the week.
  • Mark · 1 year ago
    DougS,

    1) PC gaming is still a huge market. This will remain the case.
    2) Actually the MacBook Pro was the fastest reviewed, not the fastest overall. In any event it's now been superceded.
    3) LOL fanboys.

    That is all.
  • Howard · 1 year ago
PC games are definitely superior to console games, regardless of their ubiquity. Real gamers still use PCs primarily, and this will continue to be the case unless consoles can start to keep pace with higher resolutions and shorter upgrade cycles. PCs also have much better input methods, at least for FPS games.
  • Jared · 1 year ago
I would switch no problem if games were supported. I'd rather have just Linux but its the same problem there as with OSX(very few games). There are apps that will allow you to try and play games at a loss of FPS (becuase its not native)but they cost money as well (unless you know how to configure wine).
  • Mike · 1 year ago
    Real gamers still use PCs?

I find this funny, that you bring up dell and games, I agree that if you really want to play games a pc is the way to go, but not dell, didn't they just announce this week that they are finally getting rid of proprietary components in their game machines. It's because too many gamers were moving away from their peice of shit dell machines, and building their own. Thats what I did with my last game machine, built it myself.

Think about it... how many companies sell Macs? Just one. How many companies sell PCs? Even if you have think you have a better product, there are many more companies that are trying to push their PCs... not to mention the fact that if you can run Windows you'll be fine for your whole life; however, if you can only run Macs and aren't familiar with Windows, it might make life more difficult if you sadly get stuck into some cubicle of a company that gets software from Microsoft. If you're a web/graphic/print designer (and in some cases coder) then only knowing Macs won't hurt, but it's still good to know Windows. In other words, if you only know Windows you'll be fine, but if you only know Mac there's a chance you'll be forced to use Windows at some point.

Apple is on the right track with its recent product line, but at the same time everyone I Know who owns Macbooks also own a Windows PC and even another Windows laptop. You can't make the world switch over to Macs after they're accustomed to Windows their entire life... at least not this quickly anyways.

Older people aren't the target demographic of any computer company. BUSINESS SOFTWARE! It is not about the games. Seriously, think about it. Think about all the businesses that use a specific software for their business. For example, there are hundreds of little electirc/gas companies just in the U.S. alone that run software written on windows. Do you expect them to by a Mac and then have them bootup in a non-native OS?

This is just one industry example, what about the hundreds of others?

Be happy that you have something that makes you happy. Because that is all that is gonna happen.
  • Emmett · 1 year ago
A very good point dan. I knew a guy that tried to save his company money by running star office (okay thats a grenade in a can but anyway) and his boss flat out refused because it would take training to have employees learn something other than office.

The windows fanboys are idiots, they've been making the same arguments forever and even when they're wrong they don't learn. I've always run Macs and this is why.
I had a mouse before you did.
I had ethernet standard before you did.
I had a CD-ROM before you knew what one was.
    I had USB before you.
My 10 year old Mac is just starting to reach the end of it's usefulness.
My iMac boots faster than my one year newer Dell.
Despite all the beatings I put my Macs through hacking them, they still work, only twice have I ever had to reload the OS and that was my fault.

I will admit that Apple has failed on a number of occasions.
They were too slow to pick up CDRs
They were slow to pick up the two button mouse (but they did eventually)
They thought that people would pay more for quality.
They resisted hardware mods for too long (but not anymore)
They've resisted TV tuners integrating with the OS (still but you can do it) MacTV could have been awesome but wasn't)
    iPhone should have video chat.
iPhone and iPods should have a removable battery
iPods and iPhones should have SD slots.
Jobs is playing too closely to the content protection side of technology. Any time you play that game and there is an alternative, you'll loose customers.

I love my Macs, but Apple has played the closed box game far too long and they only relent when it's clear they lost the fight.
  • richardmnixon · 1 year ago
Jobs, if you actually wanted better than 7% market share, you could have it overnight. The fact that you don't want it is grounds for a shareholder suit, and not of the Milberg Weiss variety.

My aides can buy a well-equipped Windows "craptop" for $800, or a decent Thinkpad for around $1000. The minimum for a barely-usable MacBook is $1300. They can also get a very good desktop, with slots a drive bays, for $600 -- the price of a lame Mac Mini. A Mac with slots starts at $2800.

Can you manufacture the same number of boxes as Dell in same time or better?
Can you run Windows software without Windows?(technically, you have the XP API's)
  • ALIEn · 1 year ago
You guys are advertising Bootcamp as a way for a home user to have Windows on a Mac.

The problem is - who cares? The average user can't even istall Windows Vista (insert the DVD - press any key, follow the instructions), why would they buy a Mac if you can get a normal notebook with a much better OS (Windows Vista/XP), that is compatible with all apps this average user needs?

Why is OS X an advantage? Becouse it is compatible with less programs and hardware than a Windows OS? Becouse it looks different? I've lately seen more problems wih Macs, then with Windows-based PCs and notebooks - and I work in a store where we sell about 100x more PCs than Macs.

Mac is only good for people with big e-penises and some people, who use them for audio/video editing (even tho you can do the same on PCs).
