The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs: Gail Collins declares her stupidity

  • maxliving · 1 year ago
FSJ, why are you out to get Spitzer so much? I gotta agree with Nixon here. Sure, Spitzer is a hypocrite, but that doesn't negate every good thing he's ever done. I'm fine with Fake Steve saying these things (although even if it's fake, it seems to rile the commenters up--remember the Shutdown Drama?), but does Dan Lyons actually agree with most of what FSJ is saying?
  • Larry Ellison · 1 year ago
Jobso, to elaborate on what I said. What you get with 20K is security encryption that is beyond belief. Take it from someone who knows. I went to this fabulous geisha place in- well, let's say, "California."
You remember the one. We went with McNealy.

Later, I sent the receipts -uh, -files over to a friend at the NSA and he called me with a "WTF" you wouldn't believe. Ran the numbers thru every code shredder they had....nada. Like a ghost, believe me. He hit that data with everything but a Scud missle, and it didn't crack. So you see, there's a lesson to be learned.

Encrypt your data, boys and girls. Or you too, will end up on The Smoking Gun.

    Gotta jump. Call me.

The trouble is that we have such a ridiculously idealistic, almost childish attitude to politics.

We are always ready to believe in anyone that poses as a white knight on a charger, who promises to ride into Washington, New York or wherever and sweep away the old politics, and magically transform politics into something simple honourable and true. Whether it's this guy Spitzer, or Obama it's the same thing. Obama himself follows in the great tradition of outsider "Mr Smith goes to Washington" presidential candidates that always pop up every two or three elections yet are always greeted by the media as something unprecedented. They seldom make it to the White House, but even when they do, like Carter, they are usually the most disappointing and least effective of Presidents. Even JFK is not immune from criticism on these grounds. Strip away the charisma, and the aura of martyrdom, and you have a less than impressive record. Even the Cuba missile crisis, his finest hour, was caused by his own inexperience at the summit with Kruschev that preceded it, and arguably lead to his decision to confront the Soviet Union in Vietnam.

Perhaps it's time we grew up and realised that politics will always be a dirty business, because it matters, because we care and cannot agree. So horse trading, unlikely alliances, and all the stuff that gave rise to Truman's warning that "if you don't like the heat get out of the kitchen" will always be with us. Politicians likewise are seldom either saviours selflessly striving for truth and justice, or venal criminals consumed with greed and lust for power. They are humans like us, with the usual mixture of selfless and base motives, and strengths and weaknesses we all share.

And if we want our politics better, we the electorate have to get more involved, on an every day basis, not just when election hysteria hits us.

Exactly which innocent people are we talking about Jobsy? Name one. And why would a writer for Forbes rush to defend the Wall Street jerks who nearly destroyed confidence in their own vaunted system?

Just because Spitzer was a whoremonger a-hole who exploited the venal dishonesty of the money men to cynically advance his career doesn't mean the money men were innocent. And when it comes to corruption, I'll take a whorebanger any day over an investment banker who lies to investors en masse to line his own pockets with billions. The only shame is that those guys got off too easy. If they'd held up a liquor store for $100, they'd be doing hard time.
  • DL Man Crusher · 1 year ago
Yo Nixon, remember that this blog is written in character... It is from the perspective of Steve Jobs by Dan Lyons and may not reflect the actual views of DL, but rather the views of a fictional creation of DL. Try and keep the distinction in mind, bokay?
  • richardmnixon · 1 year ago
In this case I think we're clearly hearing from Lyons, as with Obamamania. I don't see the real Steve rushing to defend the folks Spitzer went after, but I do see a guy who lives in an environment like Forbes doing so.
  • DL Man Crusher · 1 year ago
That makes sense, considering DL has been under investigation from the SEC and Jobs hasn't. Wait, that's wrong.
  • richardmnixon · 1 year ago
Let's say Jobs was being investigated for murder (and god willing he will be someday :) ). I don't think he'd spend a lot of ink in his blog about how O.J. Simpson was railroaded by ambitious overreaching prosecutors.

People who've been investigated for securities fraud generally don't rush to the defense of people who're guilty of securities fraud.

Spitzer's sins don't excuse the sins of his targets, and it's amazing that some people think they do.

American Funds was just one that was found innocent. This announcement years later and to much less fanfare than when spitzer was barking around. He was a prick and now it's been bitten off. well deserved. and BTW, lighten up, its just a blog.
  • smack · 1 year ago
Well, President Nixon, with all due respect, sir,

a 100-dollar stickup in a liquor store has a 95% greater chance of ending in a murder.

Also, there are far more corrupt politician whorebangers bilking innocent taxpayers every day than there are corrupt investment bankers. Greed is not a crime. You have to actually steal something for it to be a crime.

I'll take the wall street banker any day of the week.

Odds of his crime ending in a murder (Vince Foster) are far less than some politician whore.

You'd take a whoremonger over an investment banker who lies to investors en masse to line his own pockets with billions? And a liberal lefty whoremonger at that! Remember, you pushed HMOs on the American people en masse so the insurance companies could line their pockets with billions. And you did that as the most powerful man in the free-fricken-world. What you are saying now just doesn't fit with your character.

Part of the shame of this episode is that people are now tempted to sympathize with Wall Street cheats -- people who deserve no sympathy whatsoever. For that, Spitzer deserves all that's coming to him, just like I deserve hell for making people sympathize with Alger Hiss.

I dont think anyone that didn't already sympathize with some of his seemingly innocent targets are going to start now.

I say once again, Spitzer is just a poor guy that got caught under the wrong circumstances. I think all of the new media are like a pack of wolves, and rather stupid wolves at that. Here is Eliot Spitzer trying to bring law and order and stop those evil corporate tycoons, and simultaneously, he is trying to stimulate the economy in his own little way, and what does this do nothing, Osama loving media do? They crucify him.

Do you see the New York Times complain and bitch about some guy going out to buy an iPod or a used Jag for their mistress? No, after all, they're just stimulating the economy, but poor Eliot tries to stimulate the economy and also bring some law and order, and whammo, the media is on him like white on rice. I see now that papers like the NYT is nothing but another mindless mouthpiece for whatever sells their crappy rag. I almost think they were a part of the right wing conspiracy.

For the love of all that's good and liberal, why don't you people just ask Osama if he needs another pillow or two, or a few million more bucks to undermine our democracy.
  • FBO · 1 year ago
I feel bad for Spitzer too.

Dear Brother. Please tell your elephant-hunter if he must use the elephant gun because elephants overpopulation is existent, that he can send the elephant-thoots eventually to Apple Cupertino. If some of the mondial pervers snobs wish to have a special elephant-thoot-case instead moonstone-case, diamond-case, modern-plastic-case or alu-case can maybee cleared up there.
Or better ask if the international zoo- or circus-organisations can give some asylum for the elephants in menace.
Eventually it's also possible to export some of the african elephants overpopulation to india that there can be started the assimilation (please ask the government in india before!)

To betray millions upon millions of lost lives over 200 years to help create this democracy is the height of all crimes .. kind of turns Osama in to an angle.

Of course, I predicted in my 1968 monograph that we would have such technology available by no later than 1980, but in that, as in so many other things, I was woefully short-sighted.

I'm sure Mr. Spitzer fervently wishes that I had been correct, as it's [still] not a Federal crime to "get up ins" on a synthetic person.
